More Info

Bisate sits in the amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone in Rwanda’s northwest, its handful of spherical, thatched villas stitched into the hillside like nests, an architecture drawn from the woven tradition of Rwanda’s royal court, executed at contemporary lodge standard. From the terraces, the cones of Bisoke and Karisimbi rise across the valley; below, the reforestation programme that defines the property has returned hundreds of thousands of indigenous trees to land that was farmland a decade ago.

The lodge exists for one purpose above others: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, whose permits are arranged in concert with the stay and whose trailheads lie a short drive away. Days are built around the trek (early briefing, the mountain, the return to fireplace and hot bath), with golden-monkey tracking, village visits and the lodge’s own nursery and planting work filling the schedule around it. Evenings run to dinner and the fire; this is a lodge of early nights and earlier mornings.

Wilderness, the operator, sells Bisate direct and through the safari trade; permits, which are limited and controlled by the park, should be secured before flights are booked. Rates are all-inclusive and sit at the top of Rwandan pricing, with the gorilla permit a significant separate line. Two nights is the working minimum; three allows a second trek or a rest day. The fit is couples and conservation-minded travellers; confirm children’s age policy; trekking itself carries a national minimum age of fifteen.
