On the shore of Lake Malawi, at Fish Eagle Bay in Nkhotakota, the Lake of Stars festival returns from 2 to 4 October – three days of music and multidisciplinary arts held where the water meets the sand.
Since 2004, Lake of Stars has been Malawi’s window onto the wider world and the world’s onto Malawi, pairing Malawian and regional artists with international names across music, dance, theatre, film and visual art. It is a festival with a purpose beyond the weekend: it was built to draw cultural tourism and attention to a country that rarely commands either, and much of what happens on stage carries that intent lightly.
The setting does a great deal of the work. Sets run from afternoon into the small hours against the lake, and the pace is unhurried, swimming between acts, sound carrying over open water, the horizon uninterrupted. For regional audiences and travellers alike, it remains one of the more distinctive gatherings on the continent’s festival map, defined as much by place as by programme.
