Matata - Matatu ft. Bensol

Matata is a Kenyan musical group formed in 2016 and based in Norway. The members include Freddy Milanya, Festus Mwenda. Richie Mathu, Marcus Ojiambo, and Ken Kimathi. All of the group members have been a force in the Kenyan dance industry and, they love incorporating dance moves in their music videos.

Bensol is a Kenyan performing artiste gifted singer/songwriter. He’s also a talented multi-instrumentalist and music producer who loves live music.

Matatu is a noun coined for public transport buses in Kenya, which are characterized by graffiti art and loud music, making them a unique and fun mode of transport especially for the young and the tourists.

Synopsis

Matatu is a single from their Extended Play album called ‘Unaware.’

The music video starts with three matatus racing against each other on a track after a lady starts the matatu race. It intercuts with the group wearing dancing inside and outside the matatu. They’re all wearing uniforms for matatu drivers and matatu conductors and, this gives the video an authentic Kenyan feel.

Since they’re dancers, this music video has different dances that people can try out. It includes the solo dance as one of the performers washes his purple matatu called Husky alone in an empty car wash. He draws a love heart on it with soap, and we can tell that he loves his matatu. Alternatively, there’s a group dance as they sing lyrics about driving recklessly and carrying excess passengers.

Review

The camera shots include a matatu ride and one of the performers hangs outside a moving matatu similar to Kenyan matatu conductors. Also, the overhead shot of Bensol dancing on top of a matatu is good visually before it cuts to camera shots of the Matata showing their dancing prowess.

Finally, it’s evening time, and they’re sleeping on the bus because they’ve closed business for the day.

The matatus in the video have bright colours and different designs painted on the body. It shows how the matatu culture lets matatu owners use their creativity on the roadside to entice customers.

It brings out a playful and creative take on the matatu culture in Kenya with cool music beats. The “Tao mbao mbao” chorus is catchy and fun to those who can relate because it embodies the daily hustle of using public transport in the City.
