Women and Whiskey are not a common combination. Whiskey is generally considered to be a strong drink and thus naturally associated with masculinity. More often than not, there is a perception that women who drink whiskey are heavy drinkers. It is not uncommon for a lady to order a whiskey at the bar and the male counterpart orders wine then they have their orders swapped based on the basic assumption that wine, which is considered a mild drink should be a woman’s drink and vice versa. But times have changed and women seem to have recognized and appreciate the taste of Whiskeys from around the world.
Even though whiskey has not been widely associated with women, in history, some distillers have been run by women. Scotland seems to be in the lead for making women appreciate the taste of whiskey by having some of their brands have female brand ambassadors including Glenmorangie Single Malt, whose global brand ambassador is Karen Fullerton. Glenmorangie’s first female Scottish brand ambassador in the US.
If the intention of having women associated with the distilling and marketing of Whiskeys was to make women appreciate Whiskey more, then it is paying off. Around the world, women have continuously appreciated the smoky, full-body taste of Whiskey. Consequently, women who enjoy whiskey have formed groups; globally, the “Women Who Whiskey “is an experimental whiskey club for women. In this club, women meet to taste great whiskeys and cocktail whiskeys.
Interestingly, the club just began in African with the Nairobi chapter, which also happens to be the only one in Africa. One must be at least 21 years to join the club. The club welcomes both armatures and connoisseurs who have a quest to learn more and network with likeminded people who enjoy a strong drink. The essence of the club is to create a fun place for women who enjoy whiskey to share their experiences on the drink and explore new drinks as they get introduced by their club partners.
Because every bottle is a story. Drinking whisky is like taking a virtual adventurous trip to the land of the bottle. Each whiskey has a different character and a little history depending on the region.
Scotland, known for its Glenmorangie from Speyside, and an array of blended scotch whiskeys which were the first whiskeys to be appreciated. Japan is known for Nikka and Chita, India had Rampur. It is interesting to discover an Indian whiskey made from water from the Himalayan Mountains. Ireland has Jameson, Tullamore D.E.W, and the US has Tennessee whiskey like Jack Daniels.
There are no predefined rules when it comes to pairing whiskeys. However, most women prefer a whisky taste that is complementary to the taste of food. However, experimenting with tastes is great, take your taste bud on tour and you mare discover a new taste. Cheers!!
