His first official single, “You” was released on February 14, 2020. This was followed by a 5-tracked debut EP, Get Layd, released on May 22, 2020 and it caught global attention. Omah Lay’s EP peaked at number one on Nigerian Apple Music Charts. His first singles “You” and “Bad Influence” gained over 120 million streams. This made his album an instant hit and became the most streamed Afrobeat album on platforms such as Deezer, Apple Music and Audiomack. He earned Apple Music’s “Favorite New Artiste” of the month of June in Africa. Later on, Omah Lay became the first artist highlighted for Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign to spotlight African talent on July 3, 2020
His catchy melodies, intriguing hooks, storytelling and quality production helped him make his mark in the music industry. As a Port-Harcourt native, he has certainly made his hometown proud. He is signed to record label KeyQaad in July 2019 and left Port-Harcourt for Lagos where he would pursue his career fully.
From rapping in the streets as a teenager to becoming an international superstar, Omah Lay is definitely a force to be reckoned with. His vocal delivery is appreciated greatly as it varies and has a lot of emotion in it and he is able to make a success of any genre he makes. He has since collaborated with Afrobeat giants such as Wizkid, Olamide and Adekunle Gold. We are excited to see where his musical journey will be heading as he delivers more great music.
Omah Lay alongside fellow artiste, Tems, was arrested after performing in a show in Uganda in December 2020. The Ugandan Police authority detailed that violation of COVID-19 lockdown protocols was the reason they were arrested. Although there were controversies as the arrested artistes felt they were set up. Currently, Omah Lay is signed to Dvpper Music record label.
