Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2021

Ghana is known for many things; the food, the nightlife, and beautiful people decked out to the T. Subsequently, it is not surprising that the Glitz Africa Fashion Week has become a staple event in Accra’s pop culture.

The Glitz website lets guests know what to expect from this year’s activities at the beginning of October. Slated for the 21st to 24th October, Glitz Africa Fashion Week promised to include runway shows, a beauty forum, and a seminar on business in fashion. The theme was Creativity and Sustainability, so fashion enthusiasts, as well as those passionate about the environment, we’re in for a treat, especially as a partnership with fashion and beauty giants MAC Cosmetics and Darling Hair promised a fantastic show.

This year’s events were kicked off with Free Street – a runway show to showcase casual street fashion brands by budding designers.

The featured designers included Afronative, Tribe of God, Dare Arrays, Blank Canvas, Rich Connect and OLK Studios.

Main Runway Shows

The main runway shows were breathtaking with a splendid variety of creativity.

Handmade bead brand Masantewaa dazzled with extravagant accessories that included jewelry and bags. It was especially nice to see men modeling the pieces as both are still typically associated with women’s fashion in these parts of the world.

Abidjani brand Simone et Elise’s designs were just irresistible with their bright and whimsical designs that scream body positivity and embrace the beauty of African features.

Telvin Nwafor came to show that men’s fashion needn’t be boring. By elevating silhouettes that we are already used to in men’s fashion with texture and colours, Nwafor showcased an array of practical looks yet would set the wearer miles apart in any social setting.

While Nwafor came with the texture, another Nigerian designer, Piillz and Poizn Atelier, brought the shapes. Geometry was the word of the moment and the designer showed the audience that sharp lines and unorthodox silhouettes can still look utterly feminine and gorgeous.

Business of Fashion Seminar

The Business of Fashion Seminar discussed the theme of GAFW21 – Creativity and Sustainability as well as Social Media Effect on sales. This conversation is crucial considering recent reports on fast fashion creating more waste than ever and its effects on countries like Ghana. A lot of the discarded clothes are shipped to Ghana to be resold as thrift items, but a staggering amount of them still end up in landfills.

The conversation was moderated by the delectable Angela Bamford and was concluded with a graduate fashion show, which featured designs by fashion students from the Accra Technical University.

Beauty Forum

Beauty Forum was held as an exclusive side event to the main ongoing events. The event was set up in East Legon as an opportunity to engage with beauty experts, entrepreneurs, and influencers. This segment of the events may have been the most informative and significant as there was ample opportunity to learn more about the industry.

The first of three panels featured an amazing lineup including Trudy Arnold (CEO, Studio 7 Beauty Lounge), Jahara M Osman (Founder, Premier Aesthetic Clinic), Siran Mahama (CEO, Reviv Ghana), Emily Bodom (CEO, Enhance by EB) and Tish Tagoe (CEO, Luxury Beauty Spa). The panel was moderated by plus size model Gina Nipah who led a conversation about beauty standards and surgical or non-surgical procedures that have become popular to achieve said standards.

Lexy O. Boahene moderated the other second and third panels, founder of LXHR Solutions and Co-founder of Polish’d Nails and Beauty Bar, Nana Amobi Chambers, respectively. Their panels explored influencer marketing and the process of beauty production with key players from both areas in the beauty and fashion industry
