I wish that I could turn back time to around 20 years earlier. I would tell my younger self to be more open-minded, to explore my own backyard first before anywhere else. I was always so fascinated with European history, its royalty and centuries old architecture, that I neglected to see that Africa was and still is so rich in all of these qualities and so, so much more! It encompasses everything that I have always dreamed of experiencing, culture, a glorious history filled with tales of kings, queens and warriors and sights to rival any other the world has to offer.

Once such place among many in our resplendent continent is a setting perfect for a romantic getaway or better still, a honeymoon like no other. I am, of course, referring to the wonder that is Victoria Falls, a splendorous veil of water emanating from the mighty Zambezi River plunging with a thunderous roar into a seemingly endless chasm that separates Zimbabwe and Zambia. My article centres around the Zimbabwean side, however, it is now far easier to see both sides with the introduction of the KAZA Univisa, a visa that covers both Zambia and Zimbabwe and which will allow you to take day trips between the two countries.

This UNESCO World Heritage site, named by missionary David Livingstone in honour of Queen Victoria also referred to by the locals as Mosi-Oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), has steadily become more popular over the years and thus resulting in some of the most luxurious hotels being built around it making it an ideal location for that perfect romantic tête-à-tête. Here are some of the best places to stay and things to do in this breathtaking wonder of Africa…

THINGS TO DO:

  1. THE VICTORIA FALLS STEAM TRAIN EXPERIENCE

This one probably tops my list of the most romantic thing to do. You have various options to choose from between a sunset/sun downer trip to a tram ride across the bridge and the Moonlight Dinner Run among others. I made a promise to myself to try each one upon my return to Vic Falls which will have me going back several more times. From the luxurious carriages of the vintage steam train, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the falls when the train stops half way across the bridge whilst enjoying delicious gourmet canapés and bubbly or a sumptuous dinner under the stars. All I can say is: Men, you have the rest of your lives trying to top this one in the romance department ☺

  1. HELICOPTER FLIGHTS OVER THE FALLS

Whether its sunrise or sunset or any time in between, the view of the Falls remains spectacular in every sense and in every form of light. The flight is usually around 15-30 minutes (depending on which you choose) and both equally exhilarating. They must be booked in advance and are, however, subject to weather conditions.

  1. PICNIC ON LIVINGSTONE ISLAND

The Island which is only reachable by boat and only open to persons 12 years and older departs from the Royal Livingstone Jetty on the Zambian side. The trip includes a guided tour of the Island, light refreshments, snacks and drinks.

  1. HIGH TEA AT VICTORIA FALLS HOTEL

Located in Zimbabwe close to the town and within walking distance of the Railway station, the Victoria Falls Hotel with its stunning manicured gardens offers both its patrons as well as visitors a chance to experience true Edwardian Royalty. Enjoy a High Tea fit for a Queen (or King) or for the more ravenous, why not enjoy a truly delicious candlelit dinner. Both are equally unforgettable.

  1. A VISIT TO THE RAINFOREST

No trip to Victoria Falls is complete without a trip to the Rainforest, an experience that no picture or video can ever do justice to. The Rainforest is part of the 1900 hectare Victoria Falls National Park which was established in 1937. Among the animal life to be seen are baboons, mongooses and ample birdlife. Word of caution though: unlike many national parks where waterfalls are prevalent, there are no fences or railings keeping you away from the edge of the precipice. In some places there are barriers made from trees and branches. DO NOT CROSS these as you are likely to slip and fall into the gorge below. Stay a safe distance and absorb the view around you, contemplate how incredible nature is, how utterly amazing our world is.

PLACES TO STAY:

THE KINGDOM HOTEL

Only a mere 5-minute walk from the Vic Falls, The Kingdom Hotel whose architecture is inspired by the African Kingdom of Mutapa dating back to the 1400’s. The hotel offers 294 luxurious rooms, a man-made lake, casino, safari spa, 4 swimming pools and 3 restaurants, making it the ideal place to add to a perfect setting.

THE VICTORIA FALLS HOTEL

This classic Edwardian five star hotel is situated in the heart of Zimbabwe and set in luscious, impeccable manicured gardens overlooking the Victoria Falls. The hotel is perfect for honeymooners (with 4 honeymoon suites), but offers superb luxury on all of its rooms.

RESTAURANTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

With its many hotels, there are plenty of things to do at night; the most common which is the casino entertainment centre which has plenty of great restaurants and bars. My favourite dining choice is the Whitewaters Restaurant at the Kingdom Hotel whose vast array of dishes is sure to whet any appetite and they have live entertainment with traditional dancers every evening. It is a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere.

You can also head out to the Falls Craft Village for a truly cultural experience of the Makishi traditional dancers.

If you’re in the mood to dance the night away, the Wild Thing Action Bar at the Kingdom Hotel is the place to be. The atmosphere is vibrant and upbeat and is a popular hangout. Don’t forget those dancing shoes!

HINTS AND TIPS:

  • Between April and June, the flow of the Falls is at its greatest, with lots of mist and rainbows. The lowest volume is from September to November and the view of the Falls is very clear. From October the heat can become unbearable along with the humidity from the rainy season (starting in November)
  • Make sure to take plenty of sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, sweaters for the evenings, a lightweight rain jacket and comfortable clothes and shoes.
  • Check with your travel clinic for any vaccines required.
  • There is no public transport. Make sure to book a private transfer or private taxi.
  • The currency in Zimbabwe is the US Dollar.

Victoria Falls is undoubtedly one of the most profound trips I have had the absolute pleasure of experiencing. It has left me in awe of how unbelievably fascinating our world is. It has left me contemplating forces and powers that are beyond our comprehension and yet, at the same time, how fortunate we are to be alive! To quote Livingstone himself: “It is no wonder that under the cloudy columns, and near the brilliant rainbows, with the ceaseless roar of the cataract, with the perpetual flow, as if pouring forth from the hand of the Almighty, their souls should be filled with reverential awe.”
